In book 1, the unsouled cripple etched a simple script of seven runes into an orus tree, to see whether it had aged enough to produce elixir fruit. In book 10, a Monarch’s soulforge incorporated such powerful and meaningful runes they were painful to look at (Reaper, ch 12).
