Reading refers to an aspect of magic on Asylum.

 Basics

  • Intent - Every life radiates their "Intent". That "Intent" is basicly reality warping to match reality with their intent.
  • Chimeras - have strong species related Intent. One species for example can use their Intent to manipulate their mass.
  • Humans - With the exception of "Readers" most people don't know how to use their "Intent" to their fullest extend. So as a species they mostly have a diffuse and weak Intent. Can best use their "Intent" by focusing it on an object while thinking of and specific attribute for example durability.
  • Readers - People with the ability to sense Intent. Is mostly used to "read" the Intent infused in an object. They can determine who has touched it, their state of mind, and for what purpose the object was hold. As they can "see" what they are doing with their intend they can manipulate their Intent to fully focus on enhancing one attribute and can also shift infused Intent after they fully "seen" the infused Intent.
  • Awakening - An object that has significant Intent of a specific kind can be awakened by a Reader of good skill. The object has to be fully "read" and is very dangerous for the Reader.
  • Soulbound Objects - after an object is awakend it slightly changes form and can't recive more intent. Its strenght is set from the start. It can do "magical" things. If someone tries to become bounded to one such objects they need a "matching Intent" and a Reader. This process is dangerous and can be deadly if the Intent doesnt match or the human can't handle having a specific kind of intent constantly bound to themselfes
  • Soulbounded - A person that has been bound to awakend object of power and through the bond has gained the ability to call upon the objects powers as their own.

...we still know next to nothing about the process we call "Awakening". I will summarize our knowledge as best I can.

- Ancient Research Journal

Readers may awaken objects by which process they transform their physical appearance and properties and granting increased power. Awakening an object also seems to impart a small degree of "awareness" to the object; the strength and nature of the awareness is related to its original "Intent". Once an object has been "Awakened" it may not longer be further "Invested" or "Awakened" for a second time.
