Eye of the Deep

Eyes of the Deep are memory storage constructs created by Northstrider in Ghostwater. Their purpose is to collect information about the world, then ultimately return to Ghostwater to add their knowledge to the oracle tree, a larger construct within the pocket world that stores and processes information from all the Eyes. The oracle tree also answers a question for and provides a drop of ghostwater to anyone who returns an Eye, as a reward. The Eyes also function as guides and access keys within Ghostwater.

Eyes of the Deep are housed in sapphires; the construct causes them to shimmer with white and green light.

History

After years of research in Ghostwater failed to produce a viable Presence, Northstrider created 4,096 Eyes of the Deep and spread them throughout the world to gather and bring back information. One Eye was left with the last Emperor of the Blackflame family by one of Northstrider's Heralds and was ultimately taken into Ghostwater by Lindon and Renfei; another ended up with Akura Harmony.

Lindon's Eye of the Deep was damaged by a strike from Ekerinatoth, causing the construct inside to begin dissipating. Fortunately, Lindon was able to merge Dross with the Eye before its functionality was lost, and Dross used the gem as a housing for a while. Harmony managed to take the Eye containing Dross and return it to the oracle tree, becoming one of the few people to drink two drops of ghostwater, but Lindon retrieved the gem and merged Dross into his spirit.

Ultimately, a total of 2,413 Eyes of the Deep made it back to the oracle tree. Immediately prior to Ghostwater's collapse, Northstrider returned to the oracle tree and extracted the collected memories into his prototype Presence, noticing an anomaly during the process that alerted him to Dross's existence.
