Brief
Referred to in the 18th Uncrowned King Tournament as "Black Dragon Prisoner", Naian Blackflame is (was) the last known remaining member of the old Imperial Blackflame family. See also Ashwind Continent History.
Uncrowned, book 7
An Underlord following the Path of Black Flame, Naian was driven mad by his madra, but was used by the Gold Dragon faction as a competitor in the Uncrowned King Tournament. During the tournament, Lindon and Mercy are set to duel Naian, but Lindon is sympathetic and also determined to send a stronger message to the dragons than what a simple victory can convey (Uncrowned, Chapter 14). With the assistance of Little Blue, Lindon manages to free Naian from his madness.
Between what Orthos had been before meeting Little Blue and what
he had become after Ghostwater, there was a world of difference.
Orthos had gotten his life back. Maybe Naian Blackflame could too.

Nonetheless, Lindon ultimately loses the fight. Mercy then faces and easily defeats Naian, who gracefully surrenders. As punishment for his failure and as a message to Lindon, Sophara executes Naian where Lindon can see, much to his dismay. Moments later, Northstrider teleported into the room where Mercy and Lindon waited and delivered Naian's final words: "The dragon advances".(Uncrowned, Chapter 15)
As the stone wall lowered past Sophara's face, her golden claws flashed once. Blood splattered out onto the arena, and Naian's body fell. Lindon shouted and ran forward, but an invisible force kept him from pushing past the descending door. He was no longer permitted in the arena. The Ninecloud Soul was already talking about the next fight, the Five Sisters of the Iceflower Continent against the Ironheart Legion of Rosegold. Lindon could see the last Blackflame Prince's body sprawled on the ground, his throat torn out, staring across with blank eyes. The door closed over Sophara's bloody claws. (Uncrowned, ch 15)
Appearance
Naian is described as looking older than thirty-five (though his true age is 25). He appears haggard and worn and no more than skin and bones caused by long captivity. He also possesses a black tail as a Goldsign. (Uncrowned, Chapter 14)
Personality
Before being healed by Lindon, Naian generally shows bestial anger and aggression. After his healing, Naian shows a degree of civility and honor before his death. Prior to his fight with Lindon, Naian spent the entirety of the second round of the Uncrowned King tournament eliminating everyone he encountered. It is not known how he acquired one of the crowns. His history before the tournament is not known.
Powers and Techniques
Naian is a practitioner of the Path of Black Flame. He demonstrates the Striker, Enforcer, and Ruler techniques of the Path as well as a unique Forger technique that is not named. He also shows some skill with a Blackflame sword he possesses.
