Cassias Arelius is a member of House Arelius, the branch that’s located in the Blackflame Empire. He first appears in book 3, Blackflame. He’s a distant cousin to Eithan Arelius.

Appearance

Curly golden-blond hair, slim, handsome, tall. He polishes up his Goldsign, which is a silver bracer / bracelet on his arm.

Relationships

Son of the Patriarch of the Blackflame clan branch, Gaien Arelius. A cousin to Eithan Arelius. Married to Naru Jing. She is a bright young star in the imperial Naru Clan. They have a young son. Friends with newly adopted clan members, Wei Shi Lindon Arelius and Yerin Arelius. Distantly related to Ashwind continent Sage of a Thousand Eyes Cladia Arelius.

Gaien Arelius was very important here, but Lindon didn’t care much for the aging Truegold. He had far more respect for Gaien’s son, the next heir to the Blackflame branch of the Arelius family: Cassias Arelius. Cassias sought out Lindon and Yerin after the major welcoming ceremony, his curly hair shining golden. He held a long, thin silver saber at his hip, and he bowed gracefully before the two of them. “I hoped I would be able to welcome you back someday,” he said. “But I never dreamed it would be like this.” (Reaper, ch 6)

His Marriage Bargain w Eithan

Nine years before book 10, Reigan Shen killed Tiberian Arelius, monarch of House Arelius on the Rosegold continent, and a devastated Eithan came through the portal to the Blackflame Empire (Reaper, ch 7). At that time, Cassias wanted to marry Naru Jing but for political reasons the idea was not warmly welcomed by either his own family or her royal family. So, he gave Eithan his position as heir-Patriarch to the Blackflame branch of the Arelius family, in return for Eithan’s support in wedding Jing. Her father is an important member of the Naru Clan, and vital to the empire for his battle skills (see Underlord).

Eithan was the reason he'd been able to marry Jing in the first place; only an Underlord’s word had convinced their families to agree to the match. Even putting up with Eithan for the rest of his life wouldn’t be enough to repay that favor. Though he had taken Cassias’ place. Cassias was born to be Patriarch of the Arelius family. He was a direct descendant of the bloodline, his appearance and conduct were impeccable, and from an early age he had impressed everyone with his skill in the sacred arts. But none of that had been good enough for Jing’s family before Eithan took his side. He’d traded away his position as Patriarch’s heir with a smile on his face, but the occasional reminder could still. . .sting.(Blackflame, ch 7)

Arelius “Sight”

Cassias may be a cousin, but he is an Arelius descendant, so he did inherit the famous Arelius Bloodline Ability to detect anything for some distance.

“His web of madra showed him nothing but clouds and empty air for a quarter-mile around them. . . A web of invisible power stretched throughout Sky's Mercy, bringing Cassias little snippets of information: Fisher Gesha's sheets rustling as she turned, Yerin's eyelids crinkling in a disturbing dream, Lindon's chest rising and falling evenly. There was no privacy when an Arelius was around, but it was polite to act otherwise. Everyone knew what the Arelius could do, but they didn't know about the limitations. Publicly, the family liked to pretend they had none. (Blackflame ch 7)

His detection web is not as broad as Eithan’s, but he’s still got the sight.

Cassias didn’t have Eithan’s talent in using their bloodline legacy, but he was still an Arelius. He saw more than anyone else could. So he stepped aside gracefully as Eithan plummeted from a rooftop above him. (Reaper, ch 7)

Path

Cassias is on the Path of Silver Grace. He studied under the prestigious School of Silver Grace to develop relations between them and the Arelius family. Cassias follows a Path of sword madra, like Yerin. His only technique shown is the Silver Step. It is an Enforcer technique with Striker elements developed for quick movement over a small area. His Goldsign is a silver bracer on his arm.

Naru Cassias Arelius, former heir to the Arelius family, had been allowed to marry into the Naru clan for three reasons. First, the recommendation of his family Underlord. Second, the personal feelings of Naru Jing, star of the clan’s young generation. And third, his personal strength. (Blackflame, ch 17)

Ranking

In book 3, Blackflame, he was ranked the second strongest Highgold after his wife, Naru Jing. By the time we see him in book 6, Underlord, he hoping to advance to Underlord in the rich aura of Night Wheel Valley, but his ranking as a Truegold is not known.
